Hollowness describes emptiness, not just of space, but also of substance, meaning, or genuine feeling. While it can refer to a literal void, like the hollowness inside a drum, it is most often used figuratively to describe a sense of inner emptiness or superficiality.

Imagine a beautifully decorated room that feels cold and unwelcoming; that is hollowness in an environment. It suggests that something is missing beneath the surface, a lack of warmth or authenticity. You might say someone has a "hollow laugh" if it does not seem to express real amusement. A "hollow victory" implies winning at a great cost and feeling no real satisfaction.

In literature and storytelling, hollowness often represents a character's inner state: a sense of alienation, despair, or moral decay. T.S. Eliot famously used the image of "the hollow men" to depict the spiritual emptiness of post-war society.

The word can also describe something lacking in sincerity or depth. A "hollow promise" is one that is not meant to be kept, and a "hollow argument" lacks substance and conviction. It is about appearances versus reality, a facade masking an underlying void.
