A hoagie is a specific style of submarine sandwich originating in the Philadelphia metropolitan area. While similar sandwiches exist across the United States under different aliases—such as "subs" in much of the country, "heroes" in New York City, or "grinders" in New England—the hoagie maintains a distinct identity. It is defined by its long, often crusty-on-the-outside, soft-on-the-inside Italian roll, packed with a variety of cold cuts, cheeses, and fresh vegetables.

The exact origin of the word is still debated. The most common theory links it to the Hog Island shipyard near Philadelphia. According to this story, workers there ate large sandwiches that became associated with "Hog Islanders," and the name later shifted to "hoagies." Other explanations have also been suggested, but none is certain.

Regardless of its history, a true hoagie is defined by its construction. The roll is the foundation; it must be sturdy enough to hold the weight of the ingredients and the moisture of the dressings without disintegrating.
