A hematoma is a localized collection of blood outside the blood vessels, usually resulting from trauma or injury. It is important to distinguish it from a standard bruise; while a simple bruise (ecchymosis) involves minor leakage from tiny capillaries near the surface, a hematoma involves a more significant pooling of blood that can occur deep within tissues, muscles, or even organs.

The term is derived from the Greek roots haima (blood) and -oma (tumor or swelling), reflecting its typical appearance as a raised, often tender mass. Hematomas range in scale from small, subcutaneous spots to large, painful masses that require medical attention. They most commonly occur after blunt trauma—such as a fall or a heavy blow—but can also be caused by certain medications or medical procedures like injections.

In terms of usage, "hematoma" is primarily a medical term. You will frequently hear healthcare providers use it when discussing recovery from surgery or traumatic injuries. For instance: "The patient developed a hematoma at the incision site," or "A subdural hematoma can be life-threatening if it puts too much pressure on the brain." (Subdural refers to the space beneath the dura mater, the tough outer membrane of the brain).

While the majority of hematomas are benign and resolve without intervention, larger ones can lead to complications, such as nerve pressure or inflammation. They are typically characterized by swelling, tenderness, and a progression of colors—from deep red and purple to blue, black, and eventually yellow as they heal. If a significant lump appears after an injury and does not show signs of improvement, it is generally advised to seek a professional medical evaluation.
