Hematite is more than just a pretty stone; it carries a long story of iron and color. Its name comes from the Greek word for "blood" (haima), a reference to the deep red streak it leaves when rubbed on a rough surface. Even so, it does not always look red. Some pieces are earthy and rust-colored, while others look silvery gray or almost black with a shiny surface. For centuries, people have ground it into pigment for paints and dyes, and many cultures also used it in jewelry and small carved objects. Ancient Egyptians, for example, wore it in amulets and ornaments. Today, it is still used in beads and pendants, valued for its smooth feel and metallic shine.
Hematite (Fe2O3) is the most important mineral form of iron oxide and the world's main source of iron ore. Its name comes from the Greek word haimatites, meaning "blood-like," which points to the red color it shows when crushed or powdered. Even though that red powder is one of its best-known features, the mineral itself can look quite different from one sample to another. It may appear as dull, reddish-brown masses, but it also occurs in metallic gray to black forms with a bright, almost mirror-like luster known as "specular hematite." This metallic variety is especially popular in jewelry and ornamental objects.
Beyond its appearance, hematite has played an important role throughout human history. Ancient civilizations used it in many ways: Egyptians crafted amulets from it and believed it helped the soul in the afterlife, Greeks and Romans used it as a pigment for paints and seals, and various cultures used it in traditional medicine, although those medical uses are not supported by modern science.
Today, while still valued for its beauty, hematite matters most in industry. It is mined around the world on a massive scale to produce the iron needed for steel, supporting much of modern construction and manufacturing.
