It's a flashlight attached to a strap that goes around your head, so your hands stay free while you work, walk, or climb. Unlike a handheld flashlight, it shines wherever you look, which makes it very useful when you need both light and movement. It first became common with miners, but now many hikers, campers, runners, and mechanics use one too. You might see one moving along a dark trail or lighting up a tent, an engine, or a path home during a power cut.

A headlamp is a portable, hands-free light worn on the forehead. It usually has a small lamp, often an LED, attached to an adjustable strap. This lets the user point the light wherever they are looking without holding anything, which makes it especially useful for tasks that need both hands. In many places, especially in British English, "headlamp" can also mean the strong light at the front of a vehicle, much like "headlight."

The wearable kind has its roots in mining, where workers once attached candles or oil lamps to their hats to move through dark tunnels. Mining is still one use, but today these lights are also common for hikers, campers, runners, cyclists, and cave explorers. They are useful for work as well: a mechanic might wear one under a car, and an astronomer might use a red-light version to read charts without harming night vision.

Modern headlamps can be quite advanced, with adjustable brightness, different beam settings, and water-resistant designs for bad weather. Some expensive models even have sensors that dim or brighten the light automatically depending on the surroundings. They have come a long way from the old flames used by early miners. Whether you are exploring a cave or just trying to find a fuse box during a power outage, a headlamp can be a very practical tool.
