haze

In its most literal sense, haze describes a slight obscuring of the air near the ground. It is usually caused by fine dust, smoke, pollution, or other tiny dry particles floating in the atmosphere. It is helpful to distinguish it from fog: fog is made of tiny water droplets, while haze is usually dry. You might see a heavy haze on hot summer days in a polluted city, or after a wildfire when smoke hangs in the air for miles. Phrases like "the distant mountains were lost in a blue haze" create a picture of softened outlines and reduced visibility.

Beyond the weather, "haze" often describes a state of mental confusion, drowsiness, or poor focus. Strong medication might leave you in a haze, making it hard to concentrate. Someone recovering from a serious illness might feel as if they are slowly coming out of a haze. Figuratively, the word can also refer to memories, periods of time, or details that feel distant and unclear. When we say, "The details of that night are lost in the haze of years," we mean that memory has faded and become less sharp.

In a very different sense, "haze" can also be used as a verb. To haze someone means to force a new member of a group to do unpleasant, tiring, or humiliating things as part of an initiation, often in schools, clubs, fraternities, or sports teams. Whether it is blocking your view of the horizon, clouding your thoughts, softening old memories, or describing abusive initiation, haze is tied to the idea of clarity being reduced or taken away.
