Hawkbit is the common name for several kinds of wild flowering plants in the daisy family. These plants are often mistaken for dandelions because they usually have bright yellow flower heads and grow low to the ground. Still, they are not true dandelions. Depending on the species, their leaves may be hairier, more deeply cut, or differently shaped, and the flowers often grow one to a stem.

The name is linked to an old folk belief that hawks used the plant to sharpen their eyesight. Whether or not anyone truly believed that in a practical way, the story stayed, and the name did too.

You will usually hear the word used when talking about wild plants, flowers, meadows, or field guides. It often refers to a yellow-flowered plant growing in grassland or by a roadside, especially in Europe and Asia. Hawkbits can matter to insects that feed on pollen and nectar, and they are part of the everyday plant life of open country.

So if you notice a flower that looks like a small wild cousin of the dandelion, there is a fair chance you are looking at a hawkbit: modest, easy to miss, and quietly at home in the landscape.
