Originating in regions linked by old trade routes, hawala predates modern banking and continues to be used today, especially in parts of South Asia, the Middle East, Africa, and in diaspora communities around the world.
The process relies on a network of hawaladars—brokers who operate based on long-standing relationships and mutual trust. Here's how it typically works: A sender gives money to a hawaladar in their location, along with the name of the recipient and a secret code or identifying information. The hawaladar then contacts their counterpart (another hawaladar) in the recipient's country via phone, messaging apps, or secure communication channels. The receiving hawaladar delivers the funds to the recipient, often deducting a small commission.
Crucially, no money actually moves across borders in the usual banking sense. Instead, the hawaladars settle their debts through other means—often trade deals, cash balancing, or future transfers in the opposite direction. This can make the system harder for authorities to track and regulate, which has led to concerns about its use in illegal activities such as money laundering or the financing of terrorism. However, for many people with limited access to formal banking systems, hawala remains an important way to send money home, often with lower fees and greater convenience than traditional services.
While increasingly scrutinized by governments worldwide, hawala persists as a testament to the power of trust and community in facilitating financial transactions—a shadow banking system operating alongside, and sometimes outside of, the formal financial world.
