The term "hardball" comes from baseball, where it originally referred to the standard game played with a hard ball, in contrast to softball. Outside sports, "hardball" describes a tough, aggressive style of dealing with people, especially in negotiation, politics, law, or business. It suggests strong pressure, firm demands, and little interest in compromise.

You might hear someone say, "The union is playing hardball with the company over contract negotiations," meaning the union is taking a very firm position and is not giving way easily. Or someone might say, "The lawyer played hardball during the settlement talks," to show that the lawyer used pressure and a tough strategy to get a better result.

Playing hardball is not always presented as wrong. Sometimes people see it as necessary when the stakes are high or when the other side is also being difficult. Even so, the phrase often carries a critical tone because it suggests a cold, severe, or overly combative approach. It can help someone win in the short term, but it can also damage trust and make a conflict worse.

The phrase became especially common in political speech and journalism, and from there it spread into everyday English. Today, if someone talks about "playing hardball," they usually mean that a person or group is acting in a very tough, determined, and pressure-driven way to gain an advantage or force an outcome.
