hangman

C2
noun

Pronunciation

UK

  • /hˈæŋmən/

US

  • /ˈhæŋmən/

Description

The word "hangman" has two very different meanings. Most people know it as the classic pencil-and-paper game where you guess letters to reveal a hidden word. In this version, each wrong guess brings you closer to completing a drawing of a stick figure on a gallows. But in history, a hangman was the person whose job was to carry out executions by hanging. It is a grim role with a long history, dating back to times when public hangings were common, though disturbing, events.

Today, we rarely use "hangman" for a real official, but you will still see the term in historical fiction, true crime, or classic literature. The game, thankfully, is much lighter. Whether played on a chalkboard or online, the goal is simply to test your vocabulary. Just be careful to solve the word before the drawing is finished; nobody wants to lose at the gallows.
