handwrite

C2
verb

Pronunciation

UK

  • /hˈændraɪt/

US

  • /hˈændraɪt/

Description

Before computers and keyboards, people wrote everything this way—letters, stories, and even important documents. To handwrite means to write letters and words yourself with a pen, pencil, or another writing tool instead of typing them. It often feels more personal than typing because each person's writing looks a little different. Even now, many people choose to handwrite notes, journals, or cards because it feels warm, direct, and thoughtful. A handwritten thank-you note, for example, often feels more special than a typed one.
