The word "halal" is central to the lives of Muslims worldwide. It comes from Arabic and means "lawful" or "permissible" in Islam. Many people first meet the word in the context of food, where it describes food and drink that meet Islamic rules about ingredients and preparation. But the idea goes beyond what is on the table.

When people talk about halal food, they usually mean more than simply avoiding pork or alcohol. Meat must come from animals slaughtered according to Islamic rules, and other ingredients must also be permissible. For example, gelatin from animals not prepared in that way would not be considered halal.

However, "halal" is not limited to the kitchen. People also use it when speaking about finance, cosmetics, medicine, and other parts of daily life that should follow Islamic teachings. In that broader sense, it points to choices that fit religious rules and values.

You might hear someone say that a product is "certified halal," meaning that a trusted group has checked whether it meets the required standards. For Muslim consumers, that label offers reassurance. So while the word is often linked with food, it usually carries the wider sense of something that is allowed under Islamic law and practice.
