The guilder (pronounced "GILL-der") was the official currency of the Netherlands from the 16th century until 2002, when it was replaced by the euro. Its name comes from the Middle Dutch word gulden, meaning "golden"—a nod to the coin's original gold content. For centuries, it wasn't just a piece of metal; it represented economic power and stability, particularly during the Dutch Golden Age (roughly 1600–1700), when the Netherlands was a global leader in trade and exploration.
