The groundhog (Marmota monax) is a rodent belonging to the squirrel family, but unlike its tree-dwelling cousins, the groundhog prefers life underground. Native to North America, these stout, furry creatures are best known for their annual appearance on February 2nd—Groundhog Day. According to folklore, if a groundhog emerges from its burrow and sees its shadow due to clear weather, it will retreat back inside, signifying six more weeks of winter. If the day is cloudy, the groundhog won't see its shadow, predicting an early spring.
