The word "griot" (pronounced GREE-oh) is a French term for a traditional West African storyteller, praise singer, musician, and oral historian. In Mande cultures, the person is often called a jeli; jeliya refers more broadly to the art or tradition itself. For centuries, griots have played a crucial role in preserving the history, traditions, and cultural identity of communities such as the Mandinka and other West African groups.

Historically, griots served as advisors to kings and chiefs, chronicling their reigns, celebrating their victories, and offering counsel. They memorized vast amounts of information—genealogies stretching back generations, epic poems recounting legendary events, proverbs embodying wisdom, and songs narrating the lives of ancestors. This knowledge wasn't simply recited; it was performed, often accompanied by music played on instruments like the kora, balafon, or ngoni, utilizing sophisticated dramatic storytelling techniques.

Today, while modern forms of communication exist, griots continue to be important figures in West African societies. They perform at ceremonies, festivals, and social gatherings, keeping traditions alive and passing them down to new generations. They are increasingly recognized internationally for their artistic contributions and the vital role they play in preserving intangible cultural heritage.
