The term "greenfield" originally referred to land that had not been built on, literally a "green field." The land may still have been used for farming or left open, but it had no existing buildings or urban infrastructure. Today, the term is common in business, planning, and development to describe undeveloped land where a new project can be built from the ground up. A new suburb spreading into open land or a factory built on former farmland would both be classic examples of greenfield development.

A greenfield project suggests a "blank canvas." It gives planners, builders, or engineers more freedom in design and implementation because there are no older structures or systems to work around. At the same time, this freedom can come with environmental costs, since development may replace open land, farmland, or natural habitats. In business, "greenfield investment" often means that a company starts a new operation, sometimes in another country, by building new facilities from scratch rather than buying or reworking an existing one.

"Greenfield" is also common in technology. In software development, a greenfield project is a new system built without legacy code, old architecture, or existing platform limits shaping every decision. It is the classic "clean slate" situation for a development team. Whether it describes land waiting for construction or a software project starting fresh, "greenfield" points to the chance to build something entirely new.
