Graduation, at its heart, marks the end of one stage and the start of another. Most commonly, it refers to finishing a course of study and, very often, to the ceremony held for that achievement. It is the moment when students receive diplomas or degrees after completing high school, college, university, or another formal program. The word often brings to mind speeches, gowns, proud families, and the sense that a lot of hard work has led to an important milestone.

The word can also appear in other organized settings where someone completes a period of training, such as the police academy, military training, or a professional course. In these cases, the meaning is still close to the academic one: successful completion followed by moving on to the next step. A broader figurative use does exist, but it is less common and usually depends heavily on context.

Beyond education and training, "graduation" has a technical meaning. It can refer to the marks or lines on a measuring instrument, such as a ruler, thermometer, measuring cup, or beaker. These graduations show units, levels, or steps on a scale.

The word comes from the Latin gradus, meaning "step," which fits its central idea very well. Whether it describes a school ceremony, the completion of training, or the marks on a scale, it carries the sense of ordered progress. In everyday English, though, the academic meaning is by far the most common.
