Governance refers to the systems and processes by which a country, company, school, or other organization is directed, controlled, and held accountable. It is more than just "government," though the two are closely related. Government can be one part of governance, but the term also includes the wider way power is used, decisions are made, and responsibilities are checked within a group or institution.

Think about a company with a board of directors. The board does not handle every daily task, but it sets direction, watches performance, and makes sure managers act in the company's interest. In short, it is the framework that shapes authority, oversight, and decision-making within a group.
