The golliwog began as a character created by Florence Kate Upton in 1895, appearing in her children's book The Jolly Little Golliwogg. What started as a storybook figure soon became a common image on dolls, toys, books, and advertising materials during much of the 20th century. It was usually shown as a blackface-style doll with very dark skin, bright red lips, exaggerated eyes, and unruly hair, often dressed in colorful clothing.

However, the character's roots are closely tied to racist caricatures that were common in the Victorian era. These images were linked to minstrel shows, in which white performers in blackface mocked Black people for entertainment. The golliwog's exaggerated features repeated these stereotypes and helped normalize harmful and demeaning ideas about people of African descent.

Over time, as public understanding of racism grew, the golliwog became more controversial. Some people defended it as part of childhood nostalgia, but many others pointed out that the image itself carries a long history of racism and can be deeply hurtful. Today, it is widely considered offensive, and its use is generally avoided. Many shops have stopped selling such dolls, and references to the character are sometimes removed from older books, packaging, and media.

Understanding the history of the golliwog is not about erasing the past, but about recognizing the harm attached to the image and learning from it. Its history shows how something once presented as playful or harmless can be shaped by racism and keep harmful stereotypes alive. In modern English, the word is mainly relevant in historical, cultural, and anti-racist discussions, where it is treated as a deeply offensive term and image.
