The term godown refers to a warehouse, storeroom, or storage facility for goods, most commonly in South Asia and Southeast Asia. You see it often in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Singapore, and nearby trading contexts. In many cases, it means much the same as warehouse, but it carries a clear regional flavor. When a novel, newspaper report, or business record mentions a godown, it usually means a place where goods are kept before sale, delivery, or export.

These places have long been part of trade networks. Goods arriving by ship, rail, or road could be stacked there until merchants, shopkeepers, or agents were ready to move them on. A godown might hold textiles, rice, tea, spices, machinery, paper, or any other stock that needs protection and organization. Some are small and plain, attached to a shop or market yard. Others are large secured buildings near ports, stations, factories, or wholesale districts.

The word is not related to the English phrase "go down," even though it sounds similar. In modern use, godown can still describe a traditional storage building, but it may also refer to an ordinary commercial warehouse.
