The word "glial" is an adjective. It means "relating to glia" or "relating to the support cells of the nervous system." Glia are not the main signal-carrying neurons, but they are essential because they help neurons survive and work properly. So when scientists talk about glial cells, glial function, or glial damage, they are talking about this support side of the nervous system.

The name comes from a Greek word meaning "glue," because glia were once thought to be little more than filler that held nerve tissue together. That older idea turned out to be far too simple. Glia do many important jobs: some help feed neurons, some form myelin to insulate nerve fibers, some help control the chemical environment around neurons, and some act as immune defenders in the brain and spinal cord.

In those settings, the word does not name one single cell by itself; instead, it describes something connected to glia.
