The vision damage it causes cannot usually be reversed, so early detection is very important. Treatment often includes eye drops, laser treatment, or surgery to lower eye pressure and slow further harm to the nerve.

The word comes from Greek and was linked long ago to a pale or cloudy look in the eye. Today, doctors diagnose it with modern eye exams rather than by appearance alone. Regular full eye checks, including pressure measurement and examination of the optic nerve, are one of the best ways to find it early and protect your sight. It often works quietly, but careful treatment can help many people keep their vision for years.
