glaucoma

C2
noun

Pronunciation

UK

  • /ɡlɔːkˈəʊmə/

US

  • /ɡlɔˈkoʊmə/

Description

Imagine your eye as a delicate ball filled with fluid. This word does not name just one disease, but a group of eye conditions that damage the optic nerve, the part that carries visual signals from your eye to your brain. High pressure inside the eye is a common cause, but the damage can also happen when the pressure is not very high. If it is not treated, it can slowly steal your sight, often starting with side vision. It is hard to notice early because it often has no clear symptoms, which is why regular eye exams matter so much.
