The word "glassy" does not usually just mean "made of glass." More often, it describes something that has the look or feel of glass: smooth, shiny, hard, or reflecting light. Depending on the context, it can suggest beauty and stillness, or something blank and distant.

You will often see "glassy" used for surfaces in nature. A pond, lake, or sea can be described as glassy when it is so calm that it looks smooth and mirror-like. You can also use it for other surfaces that shine in a similar way, such as a glassy finish on pottery, paint, ice, or a freshly waxed car. In these cases, the word points to a hard, sleek, polished look.

Another common use is for a person's eyes or expression. "Glassy" eyes often look vacant, fixed, or unfocused, as if the person is in shock, unwell, very tired, or not fully present. A glassy expression can seem blank or emotionally far away. Sometimes the word is also used for a voice, especially if it sounds flat and lacking warmth.

So the word moves between two main ideas. In one sense, it describes a surface that looks smooth and reflective, almost like a mirror. In the other, it describes eyes, expressions, or sometimes voices that seem empty, cold, or distant.
