Geraniums are popular flowering plants known for their vibrant colors and relatively easy care. While often referred to simply as "geraniums," most common garden varieties actually belong to the genus Pelargonium. True geraniums (genus Geranium) exist too, but they are more commonly known as "cranesbills" and are less frequently found in decorative home gardens.

The name "geranium" comes from the Greek word "geranos," meaning "crane," because the plant's seed capsule resembles a crane's beak. Most of the garden varieties we love originated in South Africa and were brought to Europe in the 17th century. Since then, breeders have developed hundreds of different varieties, ranging from upright bedding plants to trailing types perfect for hanging baskets.

Geraniums are prized for their showy blooms, which come in a wide range of colors including red, pink, white, orange, and purple. Many varieties also have fragrant foliage, with leaves that smell like roses, lemon, or even mint. Some scented types are also grown for their pleasant smell, not just for their flowers.

Beyond gardening, "geranium" can also be used as an adjective describing a bright, punchy red color—think of "geranium red" paint or fabric. It evokes a cheerful, vibrant tone that mimics the flower's natural brilliance.
