These bands often split into smaller foraging groups during the day, returning to sleep together on cliffs for protection from predators like leopards and hyenas.
Their diet consists primarily of grasses, roots, seeds, and occasionally insects. This grazing behavior is similar to that of cattle or sheep, earning them the nickname "grazing geladas." They are also known for their complex communication system, utilizing a variety of facial expressions, vocalizations, and postures to convey information within their social groups.
Sadly, gelada populations face threats from habitat loss caused by agricultural expansion and human encroachment. Conservation efforts are important to help this remarkable primate survive in its unique Ethiopian home.
