Gasworks are facilities built to manufacture fuel gas, mainly from coal, though sometimes from oil or other materials. Before electricity and modern natural gas systems became common, these plants played an important part in supplying light and heat to growing towns and cities. Coal was heated without normal burning to produce a gas, often called town gas, which was then cleaned and sent through pipes to homes, streets, and businesses.

Gasworks were usually large industrial complexes with furnaces, pipes, and big storage tanks called gasholders or gasometers. These structures became a familiar part of the skyline in some cities. The work could be dangerous because of leaks, fire, and harmful waste products. The smell of such a place was often strong and unpleasant, and many sites later became known for serious ground pollution.
