Gallstones are hard, pebble-like deposits that form in the gallbladder, a small organ under the liver. The gallbladder stores bile, a digestive fluid made by the liver that helps break down fats. These stones develop when substances normally dissolved in bile - such as cholesterol or bilirubin - crystallize and harden.

There are several types of gallstones, but most are made primarily of cholesterol. They can range in size from a grain of sand to a golf ball! However, if a stone blocks one of the bile ducts (the tubes that carry bile from the gallbladder and liver to the small intestine), it can cause sudden, intense pain known as a gallbladder attack or biliary colic. Gallstones are common and affect millions of people worldwide. Risk factors include being female, being over 40, having obesity, having a family history of gallstones, and following a high-fat diet. Doctors usually find them with an ultrasound. Treatment can range from watchful waiting when there are no symptoms to medicine in some cases, or surgery to remove the gallbladder, a procedure called cholecystectomy.
