Gallium is a soft, silvery metal with a surprising habit: it melts at just above room temperature, so a small piece can start to turn liquid in your hand. You do not usually find it by itself in nature. Instead, it appears in tiny amounts in ores of aluminum and zinc. Although it is a metal, people often talk about it because of electronics. When it is mixed with certain other elements, it helps make semiconductors, the materials used in phone parts, LEDs, solar panels, and other modern devices.

Gallium is a chemical element with the symbol *Ga and atomic number 31. It was discovered in 1875 by the French chemist Paul-Émile Lecoq de Boisbaudran and named after Gallia*, the Latin name for France. It is a soft, silvery metal best known for its very low melting point: 85.6°F (29.76°C). That is low enough for solid gallium to melt from the warmth of a human hand.
Gallium is not usually found as a free metal in nature. Instead, it occurs in small amounts in the Earth's crust, especially in bauxite and zinc ores, and is usually collected as a by-product when those materials are processed. Pure gallium is a metal, but many of its most important uses come from its compounds, especially gallium arsenide (GaAs) and gallium nitride (GaN). These materials are used in semiconductors for LEDs, radio-frequency devices, solar cells, power electronics, and other parts that need speed, efficiency, or high heat tolerance.
Gallium is also known for the way it can weaken some metals, especially aluminum, by getting into their structure and making them brittle. This gives it a memorable place in science classrooms and materials research. Because some gallium alloys stay liquid over a wide range of temperatures and are less toxic than mercury, they have also been used in specialized thermometers and other technical applications. Researchers continue to study liquid gallium alloys for flexible circuits, soft robotics, and advanced cooling systems.
