fustian

The word fustian has a fascinating history, starting as the name of a practical fabric and later becoming a term for inflated, empty language. Originally, fustian was a durable cloth made from a linen warp and cotton weft, popular in the 16th and 17th centuries for clothing like doublets and jackets. It was relatively inexpensive but could be finished in a way that made it look richer than it really was.

By the Elizabethan era, "fustian" had also taken on a figurative meaning: speech or writing that is showy, pretentious, and lacking in real substance. The change makes sense. The cloth could seem grander than it was, and the same idea was applied to language that sounded impressive but carried little weight.

Shakespeare and his contemporaries frequently used "fustian" to mock characters who indulged in inflated language and empty rhetoric. In Henry IV, Part 2, the character Pistol is famously called a "fustian rascal" because of his absurdly theatrical and overblown way of speaking. It implies that his brave words are all "hot air"—impressive-sounding but ultimately meaningless.

Today, we mostly use "fustian" for overly ornate or bombastic writing and speech. A long argument full of grand phrases, dramatic tone, and complex wording that hides a weak point is a good example of fustian. The word suggests an attempt to impress by style rather than by clear thought or real insight. So, if you come across language that strains to sound important but ends up feeling empty, it may well be fustian.
