In soccer, a fullback is a defender who plays on either side of the back line. In rugby, the fullback is the player deepest in defense, often dealing with kicks and covering space behind the rest of the team. Across these sports, the word usually suggests a player with an important supporting or defensive role.

The word "fullback" belongs to the language of team sports, but it does not mean exactly the same thing everywhere. In American football, it refers to an offensive back who is traditionally linked with strength, short runs, and blocking. A fullback usually works close to the quarterback and halfback, helping on running plays, picking up defenders, and sometimes taking the ball in situations where a team needs a few hard yards.

That player fields high balls, covers kicks, and tries to stop breaks before they become scores.

Although the exact role changes from sport to sport, the idea is fairly consistent: it is a player whose position is important in support, protection, or defense. Because of that, the word is best understood through the sport being discussed. In ordinary English, it is mainly a sports term rather than a common figurative label.
