Originally, a foxhunt was a formal mounted hunt in which riders on horseback followed trained hounds as they tracked a fox, usually across open country. The practice became strongly linked with British rural life and later spread to other places, developing its own customs, clothing, rules, and social rituals. For many participants, the event was not just about the chase itself, but also about horsemanship, the management of the hounds, and the shared experience of riding as a group.

In the modern era, concerns about animal welfare and changes in the law have reshaped the practice. In many places, traditional live-animal hunting has been restricted or replaced by trail hunting, where the hounds follow a scent laid down in advance. Even so, the word still suggests a very specific scene: riders in formal dress, hounds moving as a pack, and a fast run through fields, woods, and hedges.

Sometimes the word appears in a figurative way for a determined chase after something hard to find or pin down, but that use is much less common than the literal one. Most of the time, "foxhunt" refers to the hunting event itself, the tradition around it, or a modern version of it. Overall, the word carries ideas of pursuit, rural tradition, horses and hounds, and a practice that has become socially and legally controversial in many places.
