Imagine an insect flitting through a garden or a dragonfly darting across a pond. The forewing is simply the front wing, the one closer to the head. Many insects have two pairs of wings, with the forewings in front and the hindwings behind. These front wings may help with flying, steering, or protection, depending on the insect. You might admire a moth with beautifully patterned forewings or notice how a beetle's hard front wings protect the softer wings underneath.

The forewing refers specifically to the front wing in animals that have more than one pair of wings, especially insects. It is the wing closer to the head, as opposed to the hindwing behind it. Unlike birds, which have only one pair of wings, many insects such as butterflies, bees, moths, beetles, and dragonflies have two pairs, and the forewings form the front pair.

In entomology, the study of insects, the forewing is often important for identifying a species. The shape, size, vein pattern, texture, and color of these front wings can all give useful clues. For example, a scientist might recognize a monarch butterfly partly by the bold orange and black pattern on its forewings. In some insects, the forewings are used directly in flight, while in others they have changed form. Beetles, for instance, have forewings that have become hard covers called elytra, which protect the delicate hindwings folded underneath.

The word is used mainly when talking about insect anatomy, and it helps describe both how an insect is built and, in many cases, how it moves. Understanding the forewing lets us notice details that are easy to miss at first glance: a butterfly's bright front wing, a dragonfly's narrow front wing, or a beetle's protective wing case. So the next time you see a winged insect pass by, think about the front pair that leads the body and often tells us a great deal about the creature itself.
