forehand

The word "forehand" is built on the idea of the front or leading side. Today, most people know it from racket sports. In tennis, pickleball, table tennis, and similar games, a "forehand" is a stroke played on the side where the player can swing more naturally, with the front of the hand leading the action. For a right-handed player, that is usually the right side; for a left-handed player, the left. It is often seen as a basic attacking shot because it can feel more direct and more powerful than the backhand.

The word also has an older and still useful meaning in horse riding. There, the "forehand" is the front part of the horse, especially the head, neck, shoulders, and front legs. Riders may talk about how a horse carries its weight on the forehand, meaning on its front end rather than more evenly or farther back.

Older English also has the related form "forehanded," which can mean prepared in advance or careful with money, but that sense belongs mainly to the longer form, not to the everyday noun "forehand" itself. In normal modern use, if someone says "forehand," they almost always mean the sports shot, and in riding contexts they mean the front part of a horse.

So the word moves through two main scenes: a player stepping into a strong shot, and a horse shifting weight through its front end. In both cases, the central idea stays the same: the part in front, the side that leads, or the motion that comes forward first.
