The word "fob" has a layered history that moves from clothing to social behavior to modern gadgets. In early use, it referred to a small pocket, especially the little pocket in breeches or a vest made for carrying a pocket watch. From there, the word was also used for the short chain, ribbon, seal, or ornament attached to the watch. So in older English, a fob could mean either the small pocket itself or the decorative attachment hanging from the watch.

The verb use appears in the phrasal verb "fob off." To fob someone off is to put them off with an excuse, a false reason, or a poor substitute instead of dealing with the matter properly. The idea is avoidance: someone is trying to satisfy you just enough to make you go away.

In modern life, the most common noun use is probably in key fob. This means a small device, usually carried on a keychain, that unlocks a car, starts an engine remotely, or gives access to a building. That modern sense does not come from the verb meaning "to put someone off"; it continues the older noun idea of a small attached object. Whether it refers to a watch accessory from the past, a device in your pocket today, or the act of brushing someone aside with excuses, "fob" is a compact word with several distinct but well-established uses in English.
