Fluorocarbons are chemical compounds made only of carbon and fluorine atoms. Unlike hydrocarbons, which contain carbon and hydrogen, these compounds are built around the very strong bond between carbon and fluorine. That bond helps make them unusually stable, resistant to heat and chemical attack, and often poor at mixing with water or oil.

Because of these properties, fluorocarbon materials have been valuable in coatings, electrical insulation, specialty fluids, and high-performance industrial parts. Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), known by the brand name Teflon, is a well-known example and is famous for its non-stick surface. In everyday speech, people also connect the term with refrigerants, although many refrigerants are more accurately described as related halocarbons such as chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) or hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), rather than simple fluorocarbons.

The word also appears in environmental history. Some related compounds, especially CFCs, were once widely used in cooling systems and spray cans, but scientists later found that they damage the ozone layer. That led to major international action, including the Montreal Protocol, to reduce and replace them. Other replacements, such as HFCs, avoid much of the ozone problem but can still contribute strongly to climate change.

Today, fluorocarbons and fluorocarbon-based materials still matter in modern technology, from medical devices and electronics to protective coatings and specialized equipment. The term usually suggests a highly stable carbon-and-fluorine compound, but in broader use it may also point to a wider family of fluorine-containing industrial chemicals. In short, it is a chemistry word tied to durability, specialized manufacturing, and an important environmental story.
