The word "flesh" starts with the body. Most directly, it means the soft tissue of a person or animal, especially the part between skin and bone. In everyday writing, it can describe the body in a physical, living sense: wounded flesh, bare flesh, or the heat of human flesh. The same word can also be used for the soft inner part of a fruit or vegetable, such as the flesh of a peach, avocado, or pumpkin.

From there, the meaning widens. "Flesh" often stands for the physical side of human life, especially in contrast with the mind, the spirit, or self-control. In religious, moral, and literary language, "the flesh" can suggest appetite, desire, weakness, and the pull of ordinary human needs. That is why phrases like "the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak" still feel natural and clear.

Several common expressions keep the word active in modern English. "In the flesh" means physically present in real life. "Flesh out" means to add missing detail, depth, or substance to something that is only partly formed. The phrase "a pound of flesh," made famous by Shakespeare, is now used for a cruel or exacting demand, especially one made without mercy.

The word can also appear in more figurative ways. Writers sometimes use it to stress mortality, vulnerability, kinship, or the fact that someone is a real human being rather than an abstract idea. Because of that range, "flesh" can sound anatomical, emotional, religious, literary, or vivid and physical, depending on the context. It is a simple old word, but it carries a great deal of human meaning.
