The word "flanker" is rooted in military strategy and field sports. It originally referred to a soldier or player placed on the outside edge of a formation. In rugby, for example, flankers are forwards who line up on the sides of the scrum and move quickly to tackle, chase the ball, and support play. In American football, the word can also refer to a receiver lined up slightly off the line, often on the outside. In all of these cases, the basic idea is the same: someone operating from the side.

The military sense is also still important. A flanker can be a soldier, unit, ship, or movement placed on the flank, or side, of a larger force. Its role is often to protect that side or to attack the enemy from an angle instead of head-on. This is where the related expression "flanking maneuver" comes from: a move that goes around the side to gain an advantage.

In business and marketing, the word appears in the phrase "flanker brand." This means a new product or brand variation launched to compete in a different part of the market while helping protect the main brand. That use is more specialized, but it follows the same pattern of support from the side.

You can also connect it to the verb to flank, which means to be at the side of something or to move around the side of it. Whether the setting is sport, battle, or branding, a flanker is usually someone or something positioned on the side to support, protect, or attack from a better angle.
