A fjord (pronounced "fee-ord") is a long, narrow, deep inlet of the sea between high cliffs, typically formed by submergence of a glacially eroded valley. It's more than just a bay or inlet; it has a very specific geological origin. During ice ages, massive glaciers carved out U-shaped valleys as they moved towards the ocean. When the glaciers retreated and sea levels rose, these valleys were flooded, creating the dramatic fjords we see today.

The key characteristics of a fjord are its steep sides, often nearly vertical cliffs, and its depth – frequently much deeper than the adjacent sea. This depth is due to the immense erosive power of the glacier. Fjords also often have a "sill" at their mouth, which is a raised area of bedrock that can restrict water flow.

Historically, fjords provided sheltered harbors for Vikings and other seafarers. Today, they are popular tourist destinations known for their breathtaking beauty and unique wildlife. The most famous examples are found in Norway, where the Sognefjord is the longest and deepest fjord in Europe. But you'll also find stunning fjords along the coasts of Greenland, Iceland, Chile, New Zealand, Alaska, and Canada.
