A fieldworker is an individual who collects data, conducts research, or performs work primarily outside of a traditional office or laboratory setting. The term originates from the concept of working "in the field"—meaning directly at the location where the subject of study or work exists. This could be anything from a remote geographical landscape to a specific urban community.

Historically, the term was most closely associated with anthropology and sociology, describing researchers who immersed themselves in communities and cultures to understand them firsthand. However, the term has broadened significantly. Today, fieldworkers are found in many professions: archaeologists working at dig sites, environmental scientists studying ecosystems, public health teams tracking disease outbreaks, market researchers conducting surveys directly with consumers, and aid workers assessing needs after disasters.

What unites all fieldworkers is the emphasis on direct observation and primary data collection. They do not rely solely on reports or secondary sources; they actively engage with the environment and the people they are studying or serving. This often requires adaptability, strong communication skills, and a willingness to navigate unpredictable situations. For example: "The epidemiologist spent months as a fieldworker in rural villages, tracking the spread of the disease." Or, "As a dedicated fieldworker for the historical society, she interviewed dozens of long-time residents about their memories of the town." The work is often challenging but incredibly rewarding, offering insights that simply cannot be gained from behind a desk.
