Pronunciation

UK

  • /fˈiːld/

US

  • /ˈfild/

Description

A "field" can be many things! Most literally, it is an open area of land, like a wheat field or a baseball field. But the word also extends to areas of study, like the field of medicine, or areas of activity, like politics. You might have a wide "field of vision," meaning everything you can see. At heart, it is about a space, whether physical or abstract, where something happens or exists.

Think of a farmer tending his fields, a scientist working in her field of expertise, and an athlete dominating the playing field—they're all connected by this idea of a defined area for action or growth. The word comes from Old English meaning "open land," but it's blossomed into something much more versatile!
