Ferromagnetic materials are materials that can be strongly attracted to a magnet and can also become strongly magnetized themselves. In many cases, they can keep some of that magnetism even after the external magnetic field is gone. The word comes from ferrum, the Latin word for iron, because iron was one of the first well-known materials with this property. But it is not limited to iron. Nickel, cobalt, and some alloys are also in this group.

What makes them special is their internal structure. Inside them are tiny regions called "magnetic domains." In each domain, many atomic magnets point in the same direction. When an external magnetic field is applied, more of these domains line up, so the whole material becomes much more magnetic. After the field is removed, some of that alignment may remain, which is why a permanent magnet can be made from a ferromagnetic material.

This is not just a scientific idea. It is important in many technologies, including transformers, electric motors, speakers, and data storage such as hard drives, where tiny magnetic regions can store information.

However, not all materials that respond to magnets behave this way. Paramagnetic materials are only weakly attracted, while diamagnetic materials are weakly pushed away. Ferromagnetism is the strongest common kind of magnetism in materials, which is why it plays such an important role in everyday devices and modern technology.
