Today, "farmhouse" can also describe a style of home or decoration. In this sense, it means a cozy, rustic look with natural wood, plain colors, and a lived-in feel, even if the home is not on a real farm.

Originally, a farmhouse was the main living place on a farm. It was the house where the farming family lived and where much of daily farm life was organized. These homes were built to be useful and sturdy, with enough space for everyday family life as well as the work connected to the land. They were often placed near barns, sheds, animals, and fields, making them a central part of the farm.

Because of this history, the word often brings to mind country living, fresh air, home-cooked meals, and a slower rhythm of life. A farmhouse may be simple or large, old or modern, but its basic meaning is still tied to life on a farm.

At the same time, "farmhouse" is now also widely used for a style. "Farmhouse style" usually means a home that feels rustic, comfortable, and practical, with features like wood, soft colors, old-fashioned details, and sturdy furniture. In this newer sense, the home does not have to be on farmland at all. Someone might live in a suburb or a city and still choose a farmhouse kitchen or farmhouse decor.

So the word now has two common uses: the real house on a farm, and a home style inspired by that kind of place. In both uses, it suggests comfort, country life, and a home that feels warm and lived in.
