faggot

C2
verbnoun

Pronunciation

UK

  • /fˈæɡət/

US

  • /ˈfæɡət/

Description

This word has a long history, but today it is most widely known as a cruel slur aimed at gay men, and sometimes at people seen as not fitting gender norms. Much earlier, it meant a bundle of sticks used for fuel or kindling. In British English, it can also mean a traditional savory meat dish made from minced meat or offal. Because the slur meaning is so hurtful, the word should be handled with great care. Some people in the LGBTQ+ community have tried to reclaim it, but that is still very sensitive and does not make it safe for general use.
