Exoskeletons serve several crucial biological functions: they act as a shield against predators, provide leverage for movement, and help prevent water loss, which is vital for survival on land. Common examples include the shell of a lobster, the hard outer body of a beetle, or the body covering of a crab.
Beyond biology, the concept has inspired modern engineering. Developers are creating robotic "exoskeletons"—wearable mechanical devices that augment human physical capabilities. These devices can help some people with paralysis walk, assist factory workers with heavy lifting, and reduce fatigue for soldiers. Whether it is a beetle's shell or a high-tech suit, the exoskeleton remains one of nature's and science's most effective solutions for protection and support.
