ever

"Ever" is an old and flexible English word. At its core, it usually points to time in a broad, open way, and its exact meaning depends on the kind of sentence around it.

Most commonly, "ever" means "at any time." This is the use people meet first in questions about life experience or possibility: "Have you ever tried skydiving?" "Did she ever call you back?" In these cases, it asks whether something happened at some point, even once.

In negative sentences, it often means "at all" or "at any time": "I don't ever want to leave," "Hardly anything ever goes as planned," or "He never ever listens" in extra-emphatic speech. This use is very common in spoken English.

"Ever" also strengthens comparisons and change over time. In "faster than ever" or "more important than ever," it adds the idea of the highest point up to now. In compounds such as "ever-changing," "ever-growing," or "ever-present," it suggests something that keeps happening or seems constant.

Another important group is fixed phrases. "Happily ever after" means forever in a storybook sense. "For ever" or "forever" means always, without end. "Ever since" means from a particular time in the past until now: "I've loved music ever since I was a child." "If you ever need help" means at any time in the future when help is needed.

In older, poetic, or more formal writing, "ever" may simply mean "always," as in "your ever faithful friend," though this is not the usual everyday pattern now. It can also appear in expressions like "ever so," meaning "very," but that sounds old-fashioned or especially British to many speakers.

So while "ever" may look small, it moves easily between questions, negatives, comparisons, fixed phrases, and literary language. Most of the time, it helps English talk about whether something happened at any point, happens without end, or feels stronger than before.
