Euchre is a lively, fast-paced trick-taking card game, usually played by four people in two partnerships. Players try to win tricks by choosing or calling a trump suit, and a bold player may even decide to "go alone" without a partner for a bigger reward. The game is especially popular in parts of the United States and Canada, where it often appears at family nights and social gatherings. As a verb, "euchre" can also mean to outwit, cheat, or block someone from getting what they aimed for.

Euchre is a trick-taking card game played with a specialized deck of 24 cards (using only the 9 through Ace of each suit). Four players form two partnerships, sitting opposite one another. The core of the game revolves around bidding and the strategic selection of a trump suit. Five cards are dealt to each player, and then one card is flipped face up—this determines the initial potential trump suit. Players then bid on whether they believe their partnership can win at least three tricks if that suit becomes trump.

The strategy deepens with the "order up" mechanic: players can require the dealer to pick up the turned-up card, making that suit trump, or they can pass and hope to call a different suit in a second round of bidding. A particularly bold player can even choose to "go alone," playing the hand without their partner for a chance at a higher score. During play, participants must follow the suit led if possible. The highest card of the suit led wins the trick unless a trump card is played, in which case the highest trump takes it. Notably, the jacks of the trump color (the "bowers") become the highest-ranking cards in the game, often shifting the tide of a match.

Beyond the tabletop, "euchre" has also entered the English language as a verb. To "euchre" someone means to outwit, deceive, or frustrate their plan; in the game itself, it can mean stopping opponents from making the points they aimed to win. Euchre is more than a game; it is often a social event filled with friendly competition and laughter. In many communities, it has been passed down through generations as a favorite pastime that rewards tactical skill, memory, and the ability to read other players.
