The word "ethnically" relates to people in terms of ethnicity: shared ancestry, culture, language, traditions, or historical background. When we use "ethnically," we are usually describing identity or group makeup in a way that goes beyond simple nationality or citizenship. Because the word touches on identity, it should be used carefully. It is better to use it to describe heritage or community background than to place people into narrow boxes. It is also important to separate ethnicity from race. Race is often linked to physical appearance in social thinking, while ethnicity is more about shared culture, roots, and tradition. So when you use "ethnically," you are usually pointing to a person's or group's cultural background and inherited identity.
