It is a common way to build a wired network with physical cables, so devices can share information quickly and reliably. Think of it as a road system for data inside your home, school, or office. While Wi-Fi gives you the freedom of going wireless, Ethernet uses cables to make a direct connection that is often faster and more stable.
The name has an interesting history. "Ether" was once used for an imaginary substance that people thought filled space. When Robert Metcalfe and others developed this networking system in the 1970s, they used that old word in the name. Even though that old scientific idea is no longer accepted, the name stayed and became part of everyday computer language.
Ethernet is a family of computer networking technologies used to connect devices within Local Area Networks (LANs), such as your home, school, or office. It serves as the primary standard for how computers communicate with one another over a wired connection.
Over the decades, Ethernet has changed a lot. At first, it referred to an early system developed at Xerox PARC that used thick coaxial cables. Today, the term covers many standards that use twisted-pair cables, often called Cat5e or Cat6, and in some cases fiber optic cables. These different versions support speeds from 10 megabits per second in the early days to 100 gigabits per second and beyond today.
To understand how it works, think of sending a letter: you need an address and a way to get it to the right place. In an Ethernet network, data is broken into small pieces called packets. Each packet carries address information so the network can send it to the correct device. The cable is the path, and network hardware such as switches helps move the packets where they need to go.
While Wi-Fi is very convenient, Ethernet is still often the best choice when you want a fast and steady connection. Because it uses a physical line, it is usually less affected by interference than wireless signals. That makes it useful for things like online gaming, large file transfers, video calls, office networks, and connections inside data centers. Whether it is a cable plugged into the back of your desktop or part of the hardware in a server room, Ethernet is one of the basic technologies behind the modern digital world.
