ester

An ester is a type of organic compound usually formed in a reaction between an alcohol and a carboxylic acid, often with water released in the process. Chemists call this reaction esterification. The resulting compound has a characteristic chemical structure and often, though not always, a pleasant or fruity smell.

Think about the scents of pears, pineapples, or even some flowers; compounds of this kind often help create those smells. Many artificial flavorings and fragrances also use them to copy natural aromas in candy, drinks, and perfume. Ethyl acetate, for example, is one well-known member of this group. It is used as a solvent in products such as nail polish remover, and it also appears in the natural aroma of some fruits.

However, these compounds are not limited to smells and flavors. They are also important in fats and oils found in plants and animals. Triglycerides, for example, are made from glycerol and fatty acids and belong to this broad chemical family. Esters are also used to make materials such as polyesters, which appear in clothing, bottles, and other plastics.

In chemistry, they are an important part of basic organic reactions. When one of these compounds is broken apart by water, the reaction is called hydrolysis, and that matters in both chemistry and biology, including the digestion of fats. So whether you are noticing a fruity smell, tasting a flavoring, or studying how materials are made, esters are quietly present in many parts of daily life.
