Equilibration refers to the process of reaching and restoring balance. It does not usually describe balance as a fixed condition. Instead, it describes the movement or adjustment that brings a person, idea, or system back to a stable state.

The term is common in science. In physics and chemistry, it describes a system moving toward equilibrium, or a more stable condition, after some change. For example, when conditions shift in a chemical system, the system may adjust until a new balance is reached. In this sense, the word focuses on the process, not just the final result.

In psychology, especially in Jean Piaget's theory of cognitive development, equilibration is the process by which children adjust their mental patterns when new experience does not match what they already know. A child may first try to fit the new fact into an old idea, and if that does not work, the child may change the old idea itself. This back-and-forth process helps learning move forward and restores mental balance after confusion or surprise.

The word can also appear in other fields where something is settling into balance over time. In biology, for example, it may refer to a system adjusting toward stability. More loosely, it can describe active balancing in movement or behavior, but its strongest and most common uses are still in science and psychology.

So, in most contexts, equilibration is best understood as the process of adjustment that leads back to balance. Whether the subject is a child's thinking or a scientific system, the idea is the same: change happens until stability returns.
